I just explored Flickr and although I've certainly heard of it, I hadn't realized how much the site does. I 've used Picasa through Google, and it's somewhat similar.Flickr is basically a place where you can store photos, but there's more to it. Notes explaining the content in the photos can be added, as well as tags, for quicker and easier searching. You can "favorite" your photos, and users can find them and see who "favorited" yours, add people to photos for your reference, and they will be able to see your posts. Photos that are posted can be public or private. Like the social networking sites, you can search for people you know on Flickr. A Guest Pass can be issued by you to those that aren't members, so they can view your private photos, if you wish. Flickr can be connected to such networking sites as Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and Yahoo! Updates, or your own website.
Flickr has extensive uploading options, which look very user-friendly and easy-to-use, and consist of a web uploader, mobile and email, a desktop app, and third-party apps (Picasa, Aperture, etc.). This was all impressive enough, but there is also a great gallery section which consists of tons of photo galleries from around the world, from the best photography archives such as The Library of Congress, New York Public Library. Last but not least is a section titled "The Places Project", which is a collection of user photos from all over the globe, highlighting lesser-known spots. For libraries, Flickr can another place post information about events, and allow the public to view photos from such special events as author luncheons, librarians and staff promoting reading and literacy. The possibilities are endless!
