Just checked out Library Thing and I found it intriguing. It works a lot like Facebook. You can sign up and can add books to a catalog, much like adding friends in Facebook. Like the social networking site, there are many applications that can be utilized. Your catalog can be customized to allow searching, sorting books, apply tagging, creating a new collection, etc. As in Facebook, you can write about yourself in a profile, list your favorite authors, bookstores and libraries. Another section is "Zeitgeist" where information from users are translated into statistics about their authors and books. The site has a forum section, "Talk", where you can join groups that have the same interests, and you can also create your own group, which can, as with your profile, be kept private or public. There is also a section, "Local", which functions a sort of community bulletin board where users can post information on local bookstores, libraries, and book festivals. Events such as author readings and signings, and discussions, especially those in your are can be posted as well. Library Thing also offers a blog widget that you can add, mobile phone access, and also a well-organized wiki on how to use the site, "Wiki Thing". I think this and other sites are trying to link people together through the web, as we're becoming more and more insular. This site allows people who have the same reading tastes to come together and discuss their recommendations, current reading choices, etc.
